Neighborhood House

About Neighborhood House

Neighborhood House assists low-income, recent immigrant and other vulnerable people living in the greater Portland area. Our programs serve disadvantaged children needing help to be successful in school, families facing hunger and homelessness, and seniors needing support so they can remain living active and independent lives. Neighborhood House served more than 18,000 people last year.

Neighborhood House's program participants represent a remarkably diverse mix of ethnicities and cultures. To meet the needs of these diverse communities, Neighborhood House offers culturally-specific services for African, Latino, Middle Eastern and Russian immigrants in various programs. We have many bilingual staff who speak Spanish, Russian and Somali and other African languages to effectively reach out to non-English speakers and to insure they feel welcome and are getting the help they need.

EQUITY STATEMENT
As we reflect on our responsibility as an anti-poverty organization, created over 100 years ago to serve new immigrants to Portland, it is clear to us that providing services alone is not enough. We must create an environment that respects the value and dignity of all members of our community: the people we serve, our volunteers, our staff, our board, and our partners. We must be a learning organization prepared to transform practices, policies and programs that have unintentionally perpetuated structural racism and inequities. We recognize that racism is a public health crisis, and we commit to building an anti-racist organization. We recognize that we are early in our journey. We must engage in action and advocacy, working alongside our partners to dismantle the systems that result in disparities in housing security, access to education, food security, employment, wealth building, and health outcomes.

We believe an equitable workforce will strengthen and enrich our organization and strongly encourage all qualified persons to apply regardless of race, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, or otherwise.
